THE EXPLANATION

In the early Bell and Shore days we played a fair number of rough biker
type joints. Including a few where the biker gangs that ran most of
the dope in Iowa spent there Saturdays and Sundays hanging around.
These were actual bikers, not the Harley riding doctors of today. They
were LISTENERS, which sounds unlikely, and often liked songs like "Blue is the Color of Regret" and "Every time I'm Crying". They were a
ruthless and lawless bunch with a sentimental side and an appreciation
for lyrics.

They were also mostly just a couple of families who had managed to
always find a way to live without being part of society, all the while
living on disability checks and unemployment. And it wasn't just the
men.The mothers were just as much part of this shadow scam world.

My job requires that I work evenings at home doing paperwork so I
often do the work while something that catches my eye on Netflix plays
in the background. One evening, not so long ago, I stumbled upon a
documentary called "The Wild and Wonderful Whites of West Virginia".
Suffice it to say there was plenty of wild and actually very little
wonderful about the Whites, who (maybe you've heard the story) combine a talent for that odd country clogging that looks like frantic tap
dancing with a history of murder, drugs, and all around pointless
behavior. I learned that the Whites had become something of a thing
for Nashville songwriters who like to pretend they are honest to God
outlaws.

So I wrote this song...because sometimes, useless is useless.

....the most political songbook I opened all year. Sowing musical righteousness from Angola Prison to “Jesus don’t like your folding money/Or the way you use his name,” he never relents but never speechifies either, just lays out brutal facts nobody can live with 24-seven on the assumption that most of us could use some reminding right about now. ... more
